General Expectations for Hotels in Italy

First of all, be prepared for a Warm Welcome. Italians are known for their hospitality, and this shines through in their hotels. Expect to be greeted with a hearty “Benvenuto!” and a genuine smile. The staff will often go out of their way to make you feel at home, offering local tips and sometimes even treating you to a complimentary espresso!

Embrace the Charm of Boutique Hotels! While you’ll find plenty of big-name hotel chains in Italy, the real gems are often the smaller, family-run boutique hotels. These charming establishments are bursting with character, often housed in historic buildings with unique architectural features and a rich history. Each room may also be slightly different, adding to the charm and adventure!

Location, Location, Location. Location is especially important in Europe where driving is not as common. Many popular Italian hotels, particularly in cities, are centrally located in pedestrian zones. This is fantastic for sightseeing or a leisure stroll down the street.

Enjoy the Rooftop Terraces. Many Italian hotels, especially in cities, boast beautiful rooftop terraces. These are perfect spots to unwind after a day of exploration, often offering breathtaking views and sometimes even a bar. Don’t miss out on this quintessential Italian experience!

Be Ready for Some Noise. Italy is a lively country, and sound insulation isn’t always top-notch in older buildings. Embrace the occasional sound of church bells or animated conversations from the street below – it’s all part of the Italian charm!

Expect the Unexpected. Every hotel in Italy has its own unique quirks and charms. From frescoed ceilings to antique furnishings, or even a garden full of lemon trees, there’s always something to delight and surprise you.

Here at Nada’s Italy, we pride ourselves in only offering our clients with unique boutique hotels that consistently exceed our strict site inspection standards. Each hotel is hand selected by us to ensure high service standards and a special ‘charm’, something different from your typical ‘big box’ hotel chains. Our small group size also allows us to stay at these smaller boutique hotels which often have limited capacity. However, due to their small size, boutique hotels also get filled out fast – it’s always a good idea to book early and lock in your spot!

Key Differences: Hotels in Italy vs. US Hotels

While Italian hotels offer charm and character in spades, it’s important to understand that they may differ from what you’re used to in American hotels. In America, we have beautiful, sleek, new hotels with spacious rooms and standard amenities. However, the same cannot be said about most hotels in Europe. But don’t worry, European hotels make it up with plenty of history, character, and charm! Here are some key differences to keep in mind:

Star Ratings

The star rating as it applies to hotels in Europe is based on very different factors than it is here in the US, and the star rating is not standard across Europe.  Hotels and villas are often denied stars if they are lacking an elevator, if there are no refrigerators in the rooms or telephones. The lack of standardization means each hotel has its unique character though. And don’t worry, Nada’s Italy always does site inspections to make sure our chosen accommodation offers a comfortable and charming stay.

Amenities

  • Air Conditioning

While most modern hotels offer air conditioning, it’s not universal, especially in smaller towns or older buildings.  And it may not be as powerful or adjustable as you’re used to. If you’re traveling in the hot summer months and AC is a must for you, do let us know and double-check before booking.

  • Elevators

Historic buildings often come with historic (read: tiny) elevators – or sometimes no elevators at all. If mobility is a concern, be sure to check in advance. On the bright side, climbing those stairs will help you work off all that delicious pasta!

  • Wi-Fi

While Wi-Fi is widely available, it may not always be as fast or reliable as you’re accustomed to, especially in smaller towns or older buildings.

  • Dining Options

On-site restaurants are common in larger hotels, but room service might be limited or unavailable, especially in smaller establishments.

  • In-Room Facilities

While most Italian hotels provide the basics, you might find fewer in-room amenities compared to American hotels. For example:

– Coffee makers in rooms are rare (but the lobby bar will serve amazing coffee!)

– Irons and ironing boards are not standard (many hotels offer pressing services instead)

– Ice machines are uncommon (you can usually request ice from the bar)

Another point to keep in mind is the age of the building you are staying in while touring. There is not a lot of new construction in Europe so while hotels may be renovated they are rarely new. The walls may be made of plaster or stone and may not be as insulated for noise like they are here.

Room Sizes

If you’re used to spacious American-style hotel rooms, you might be in for a surprise. Italian hotel rooms, especially in older buildings or city centers, can be on the cozier side. But don’t worry – they’re usually well-designed to make the most of the space, and you’ll be spending most of your time out and about anyway!

Don’t expect to see a King size bed in your hotel room. Space is precious in Europe and there is rarely room for a king size bed or even a queen. Most of the time a double bed means two twins pushed together.

Bathrooms

Bathrooms and showers in particular can present even the savviest of travelers with a brow raising experience. Your bathroom set up can sometimes be perplexing since most Americans are unfamiliar with how bathrooms in Europe work. Bidets, lack of shower enclosure or even curtain and a spray nozzle sticking out of the wall with a drain in the floor can unnerve most first timers. Frequently instructions will be posted nearby.

Remember, the joy of traveling in Italy is in embracing the art of slow travel and local way of life. So, go with the flow, enjoy the little idiosyncrasies, and immerse yourself in the dolce vita. Your Italian hotel experience will be just one part of what makes your trip unforgettable. After all, you’re in Italy to experience Italy, and Nada’s Italy is here for supporting you , quirks and all!

Buon viaggio!
